Biden Appoints 39-year-old Nigerian, Adewale Adeyemo, As Treasury Secretary

The president-elect of the United States of America, recently selected Nigerian Born Attorney, Adeyemo Adewale, as the deputy treasury secretary for his government.

Adeyemo, who has served in numerous capacities on both international levels and national levels, was appointed by Joe Biden on Sunday, the 31st of November 2020.

Adeyemo, who is popularly known with his alias ‘Wally’, had served in numerous positions of capacity, including serving as the former senior international economic adviser to the former US President Barack Obama.

With the disclosure of his nomination, Wally would serve under the former Federal Reserve Chair, Janet Yellen. Janet Yellen, 74, who has also been nominated by Joe Biden, the president-elect, would also serve as Treasury Secretary to the United States in Biden’s government.

If this nomination by the President-Elect is confirmed by the Senate, she would be the first female to ever hold the position.

The President-elect team has said that Adeyemo’s appointment for Senior economic role would help “lift America out of the current economic downturn and build back better.”

Adeyemo Adewale joins the list of official appointments to be disclosed by Joe Biden in the coming days.

Adeyemo was the National Security Adviser (NSA) for international economics in the former Barack Obama’s administration.

In 2008, Adeyemo was reputed to have helped the US economy bolster to life during the economic global recession in that year. He reportedly played an imperative role, tackling the financial crisis that hit the US economy during the Obama administration.

In a recent tweet, Adeyemo confirmed this nomination by saying:

Public service is about offering hope through the dark times and making sure that our economy works not just for the wealthy, but for the hard-working people who make it run.”

When this nomination is finalized, Adeyemo would emerge as the first African American to occupy the Deputy Treasury Secretary position in the United States.

All You Need To Know About Adewale Adeyemo

  • Adeyemo Adewale was born in Nigeria and raised in California. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Arts and proceeded to Yale Law school for further studies in specialized law.
  • Adeyemo worked on the Hamilton Project and went on to serve as senior adviser and deputy chief of staff to Jack Lew in the United States Department of Treasury. This was before his appointment by the Barack Obama administration
  • He has worked as the chief negotiator for the trans-pacific partnership.
  • He has also served as the first Chief of Staff of the Consumer Protection Bureau.
  • In 2015, with his appointment by Barack Obama as Deputy National Security Advisor and also Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, Wally also served as Obama’s Senior International Economic Advisor. With this position, he was placed in charge of coordinating the policymaking process on international investment, energy, trade, and finance.
  • He was the President’s representative for the G7 and G20.
  • Till date, Wally serves as the president of the Obama Foundation. Adeyemo is also a member of several boards and organizations including the Aspen Strategy Group, the board of Demos, and the board of the Golden State Opportunity Foundation.

Adeyemo advises policymakers, business leaders, and nonprofits on topics and strategies related to economic development, trade, and investment.

The 39-year old would be amongst the first Nigerian-American to attain such height in the US government, and it is safe to say that Africa is indeed proud of his achievements.
