Another Record Breaking Win for Tobi Amusan

Tobi Amusan

I have proven my world record was not luck.”

Inspiring words from the record-breaking women’s 100’s meters hurdle champion Tobi Amusan, on Thursday after another amazing win at the Diamond League.

This adds to her arsenal of achievements this year with golden medals already won at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon (where she broke her first world record) and at the 2022 Commonwealth games in the United Kingdom.

The Nigerian sprinter had won the Diamond League trophy the previous year with a time of 12.42 seconds, which set an African record. This year she defended her title with another record time of 12.29 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles at the League final in Zurich. This time it was a world record, beating the former record holder Gail Deversy’s time by one-tenth of a second and taking home the trophy once again.

This win is made especially important after her loss last month, finishing second in Lausanne, Switzerland. She lost to the Tokyo Olympics winner, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico who won with a new meeting record. However, this qualified Amusan for the next Diamond League in Zurich, where she ultimately took her win. And with Jasmine Camacho-Quinn finishing fourth.

Amusan has been crowned the Diamond League champion and awarded a Diamond Trophy in addition to the $30,000 top prize money, as well as a wild card entry for the World Athletics Championships next year in Budapest, Hungary.

She is the first Nigerian to take home this title and to do it twice.

“I was scared to the teeth getting on the line, but I had to just keep my calm. I am just thankful to have come out here (Zurich) and got the win,” Amusan said in a post-race interview.

“Pressure? It was more of proving to myself. I broke the World Record, and I can do it over and over again. It wasn’t just a one-time thing.
Even though after the World Championships, it took a while for me to get back into my rhythm but with enough rest, I was able to bounce back. I am thankful. God is faithful.”

She also spoke up, for the first time about the doubts that arose about her last record saying, “Everyone has doubted me. I just had to prove myself that I have got it. I am just so thankful for all of this season. I am full of emotions. Now, vacation, rest, and then back to practice.”

Well she has more than proved that she is no fluke.

Being that this was her last appearance of 2022, this win is truly special. After defending four titles this year, it has truly been a record breaking year for this talented young athlete.
