Valgos and Drusilla: How Did Valentine’s Day Begin?

Sacha was at it again. Creating heavy thunderclaps and raindrops that could clearly flood the human race. It was all the god of rain knew how to do. He claimed it made him look dangerous which was unlikely because of his baby’s face.

It had rained heavily for about two hours and king Dragos was worried. Being the king of Olympus meant he had to make sure the other gods behaved themselves. He had enough on his plate with making sure the pretty humans lived well and fulfilled the requirements of the yearly cycle but these gods were too adventurous for his likely.

Your majesty. Hugo said while kneeling on one kneel

Please make sure Sacha stops his tricks, I have a bit of a headache

Yes, your majesty.

Hugo was his majesty’s right-hand man and special adviser. He had beautiful eyes that made the fairies of Lake Steed swoon over him but he was not the fairest of them all.

At your tricks again? Valgos asked.

Ah! You know me well, old friend. Sacha said while drawing him in for a hug

But you know you could kill the humans, you should be more careful

I just love seeing them run in the rain, especially the maidens.

You vile dog. Valgos said laughingly.

Quick! Hugo approaches, let us leave. They escaped Hugo’s torment, for he could be a brute when he was sent by the king himself.

Valgos, so beautiful that words were not enough to describe him. His father’s union with his fairy mother made him an angel with beautiful wings. He was kind-hearted and loving. After the death of his mother a year ago, he spent his lonely days with his friends who were mostly up to no good. As heir to the Olympian throne, he had more than enough with playing the perfect role.

Valgos had several abilities of which one of them was matchmaking. His mother, who was the fairy of love, had gifted it to him on her death-bed. All the prayers the humans made concerning love were directed to him. He worked with three of his friends. Cupid, Sacha, and Emerald.

Some often asked, who is Cupid?

Cupid was born a god of love. He had his arrow of love which he shot at specific couples in order for them to fall in love. Sacha created magical raindrops that, once it touches the humans, had the ability to make them fall in love. Emerald, on the other hand, was the princess of songs, her tunes had made their hearts swell with love.

When humans pray for love, Valgos answers it and the four of them plan how best to fulfill it. The humans didn’t know it but they were matched by the gods. They were so innocent and ignorant that they needed assistance in falling in love.

Why do you refuse every suitor that has asked for your hand?

Father, if this is about Oscar, then I am not interested.

But Dru, you are not getting any younger.

I know father, I know.

Drusilla Wick had lost her mother at a very young age. She had to do with her father who had been nothing but loving. Now she was of a marriageable age and as the princess of Norse, it was her responsibility to her people to get hitched. But Dru was different and she wanted something different. She didn’t want to get married to just anyone. All her suitors were money or lust-driven and none saw her.

She didn’t like to hurt her father but he doesn’t understand. The argument they just had, took a toll on her and she did what she always did, say a prayer.

Dear goddess of love, queen Amira. I am grateful for the love you have given me and my papa. I would like our love for each other to supersede our dislike for the current situation. I do not know what I await, a pull, nudge, but I know there is someone for me. Help him find me. I also wish that your family grows in love. Love Dru.

Your highness, there is a prayer.

Valgos, had become accustomed to receiving prayers even in the middle of the night. As he entered the prayer room, he saw the blue crescent shine. He listened to the prayer and he felt a pull. That was strange. He had listened to several prayers since his mother died but never had he felt this kind of feeling. He had once, with his mother.

Flame, get all the records we have of the person who made this supplication.

Yes, your highness.

It was Cupid’s day of tricks. The young god transports to the human world once in a tricord cycle casts love spells with his arrows. Although he had to be careful, his targets had said a prayer first, the only liberty he had was that there was no other decision for a song or rain. Who was Cupid? Is cupid a baby or a man?

He hid his wings with a magic spell and entered into the village of Norse. He enjoyed shooting his arrows of love and he had never missed an aim except at Emerald. Their own world did not work like that.

Cupid saw Drusilla at the market square and he saw the heart sign on her head which indicated that she had made a prayer. As he was about to shoot, he heard a voice.

No, cupid, do not shoot

Valgos, you are no fun

She’s different.

Cupid was in a hurry to see his friend and know why he interrupted his day of tricks. Valgos was doing what he had never done in years, – watch the human world.

So, tell me what that was all about

Her prayer is different, I’m afraid she doesn’t need our help

No one has not needed our help

This wasn’t a prayer of lust. It was genuine

I see

Valgos had been watching Drusilla and he saw her. He was beginning to daydream. No one had been allowed to marry a human and all he wanted to do was make her his. Yet he had his doubts. What if she doesn’t accept him, she was human after all and him a god. Cupid could give her a shot or Emerald sing or will Sacha’s rain droplets do the trick? No, he wanted her to truly love him.

He transported to the human world. He knew where she would be for he had been watching her. She was at the stream she visited. She made little paper boats she set off sail on the stream. Then he emerged out of the blue.

I believe this is yours, Dru. Valgos said as he handed her one of her boats

She eyed him for a moment and smiled. I have waited for you all my life. She said

No arrows, songs or raindrops, Valgos had never seen nor experienced such kind of love. They were in love. Drusilla had met a woman five years ago, who had told her she would meet her love exactly how she met Valgos. He had found her.

Your majesty, his highness has made several transports to the human world in the last tricord cycle.

The young chap must have fallen in love, make sure he doesn’t end up like his brother.

Tine was Valgos’s brother whom Dragos had wiped from the minds of the humans. Tine and his human bride were burnt at the stake by the humans. The Olympian law of not killing humans had stopped him from defending himself. Although he survived, his bride died and he took his own life. His memory was wiped from the universe, not even Valgos knew this.

Dragos was worried because he knew the truth. He had met the goddess of reincarnation, Vera, to reincarnate his son. The only way was to bring back his son and his bride for they were bonded. The power was too much for Amira, his wife because she had to give birth to him again. She suffered exhaustion for many tricord cycles before she died. Now they had met again. He should have been stricter with the lad.

You are never to go to the human world.

Father, how did you know?

I am king and it is my business to know.

But…

It’s a command as your king Val, and not as your father.

Emerald had only songs of sorrows to write. She loved Valgos but he had eyes only for the human wench. All she had to do was get rid of her and Valgos will be hers.

She transported to the human world and tried to make Drusilla fall for someone else. She released different songs of love, others seemed to be enchanted except Drusilla. Emerald didn’t dare think of killing her because it was against the law. After trying for four record years, she gave up.

Being banned from transporting to the human world, Val and Dru looked for a new way of communicating. This time she said prayers knowing he listened and this time he answered.

Valgos, I had waited for you all my life and prayed you found me of which you did. Our bond was created even before our very existence and I pray it is forever. Your eternal, Drusilla.

Drusilla, I had a pull the very first time I listened to your prayer. This pull brings me to you every day. I see you and am watching over you. Your eternal, Valgos.

Valgos, I pray that our love extends to your father and he sees reason to let us be together. My love is yours. Your eternal, Drusilla.

Drusilla, my father is a wise king and everything he does is in the best interest of both worlds. Regardless I miss you, wear your peach dress today. Your eternal, Valgos.

Valgos, the hatred in the human world persists, please do something about it. Let them experience the love we both feel. Your eternal, Drusilla.

Drusilla, things are a lot more complicated. Except there is a prayer for love there is little I can do. Thank the goddess Amira for people like you. Your eternal, Valgos.

Hatred had taken over the human world, no one prayed for love anymore except a selected few of which some were for personal desires. There had been endless wars across the world and King Dragos had enough of it. He had no choice than to do the one thing he would never do, send Valgos to the human world. Valgos had to find a way to make them say prayers of love.

Valgos returned to the human world with his friends, Cupid, Sacha, and Emerald. This meant that he had the opportunity to see his love, Drusilla.

They had captured the east, west, and south but it remained the North of which Drusilla resided. The people were a cruel lot. They fought for everything, land, women, cattle and so on. Their hearts were already damned to hate. The people at Norse had a hatred for their king, Drusilla’s father, they claimed that he had stolen their taxes to build a fortress for himself. But it was the hate that had eaten them up.

On the 14th of February, they had planned to burn him at the stake but took Drusilla instead. As the villagers gathered around with Drusilla on the stake, Valgos took on the platform and decided to talk them out of it but they tied him up instead. They tried Drusilla for witchcraft which they claimed was her inability to get married.

As they were about setting them on fire, Cupid, Emerald, and Sacha together performed their tricks which they had never done. Cupid shot arrows, emerald released her songs and Sacha his raindrops but it wore off too easily. It was then Valgos did the unimaginable. Instead of waiting for them to pray for love, he fed them his. His love stretched across the human world. They could not understand it but they felt it. Love for mankind.

It was this gift he gave that saved the human world from destroying themselves and they celebrated it. They called it VALGOS EN TINE- a celebration of his death and his gift. It was later known as VALENTINE’S DAY: A day humans celebrated the love the god Valgos gave them.

Grandma, are you sure you are not just making up stories?

Of course dear.

Are you sure that’s how valentine began?

Well, dear, it is one of the many stories told about the history of valentine. But that doesn’t matter, valentine begins with my love for you.

What of Valgos and Drusilla?

They lived happily after, how I am not so sure. I love you, sweets.

I love you too grandma
