6 Gains of a Godly Relationship

A godly relationship

To the Christian who makes it a point of duty to follow God and know His ways, a godly relationship with God the Father is of the utmost importance. And according to Christian doctrine, the only way to have a relationship with the Father is to know him, through his Word and through His holy spirit.

While the relationship with an unseen supernatural God is key, a Christian’s relationship with others is also very important. As we all know, no man can exist all by himself. He needs companionship and relationships to grow and achieve the divine purpose.

Even God said himself that it is not good for man to be alone. This implies that God knows all about romantic relationships because he instituted them! What is a better way to know and understand the blueprint and workings of a device or system except through the knowledge of the maker or manufacturer? There is absolutely no better way!

If God is so interested in our romantic relationships, it is safe to say that guidelines have been set down to make the most of the adventure and avoid all the petty heartbreaks and uncertainty that comes with trying to do it without the Maker’s manual.

God wants the relationships we establish to be fulfilling but if we do not follow his set guidelines, we could run into trouble. Therefore, to avoid glitches or the risk of mishandling a product of such delicate importance, it is better to do it the way it has been ordained to be so it can function properly and deliver the expected results.

Having a godly relationship in the times in which we find ourselves can prove to be such an arduous task. This is a result of the temptations that threaten the sanctity of our relationships but once we are able to avoid these temptations, there are a lot of good things to look forward to!

Now, let’s dive into THE GAINS OF A GODLY RELATIONSHIP!

First of all, a godly relationship, a true Christian relationship, is different from the world’s view of a successful relationship. Why does God need to be a part of your relationship? Isn’t it better if he takes care of the big things like climate change, war and terrorism and leaves my relationship out of it?

Well, it will interest you to know that everything about you, even every strand of your hair is of the utmost importance to God and it is not news that relationships are important parts of our lives that have the power to either damage us or make us better.

6 Gains of a Godly Relationship

So, here’s why you need God in your relationship. Let’s have a ride.

“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.

Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord” (Romans 12:9-11, NKJV).

1. GOD AS YOUR FOUNDATION

The strength of a building lies in the foundation that has been laid under it. No matter how magnificent a building is or how enormous it is, it is only as good as its foundation. Rev. David Akanwa talked about how to be in a Christian relationship.

He describes the foundation of a Christian relationship as one that is kingdom minded where the persons involved answer to God and walk in accordance with the dictates of the Holy Scriptures.

How to be in a christian relationship

When the will of God and the utmost desire to please him is the foundation of your relationship, it is almost impossible to be shaken by the storms because you know who to run to and under whose cover you are to hide.

When God is the foundation of your relationship, both partners answer to God and their actions and inactions are subject to the leading of the Holy Spirit and complete adherence to the holy scriptures.

And as we all know, if God be for you, who can be against you?

2. CONTENTMENT

One lesson the Bible constantly teaches is contentment. Through Christ and His word, we can be content in every situation. In Philippians 4:12-13, we find a direct illustration of what it means to be content in Christ;

(KJV) I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

One of the major problems surrounding relationships these days is discontentment. Most people are not satisfied with their partners and therefore begin to covet what is not theirs.

It is important to note that there will always be that one person that is obviously better than your partner in all ramifications but the strength to hold fast to what you have got and forsake the pleasures of sin can only be supernatural. We cannot dream of doing this on our own.

This is why cheating in a courting relationship or even marriage has become such a natural phenomenon that everybody turns the other way when discussing it. But choosing to abide by the principles of contentment as demonstrated by Christ will prove to be that much-needed assurance and grounding that is needed to fend off all temptations.

3. PEACE

Peace. The peace runs like a river. That soothing calm that washes through your soul even in the middle of a storm. This is the kind of peace a godly relationship will give you.

A relationship where you are so certain of its predestination that you are not careful about what the future might hold for you and your partner. This is the kind of peace God promises us in his word and this is the kind of peace we deserve in our relationships.

How awesome is it that we have a mediator whose counsel is second to none when we are faced with relationship challenges that want to do nothing but tear your relationship down? His word reiterates this role in our life in the book of 1 Peter 5:7 which says; Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Knowing that you’re consciously following the plan of God for your life and relationship also gives you a sense of peace because you are certain that he has got everything under control.

There are several ways to achieve peace when you are engaged in a godly relationship.

In Thessalonians 5:15, the Bible says;

“Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.”

This is an instruction to all children of the gospel and this approach to life can prove to be invaluable, especially in our relationships. When we choose to not repay our partners with the same wrongs they committed against us and instead, we choose to go the way of peace, refusing to give in to our natural inclinations, we find out that certain conflicts would be avoided.

The presence of God in any situation guarantees long-lasting peace unlike the kind of peace the world may think it would be able to achieve through endless pursuits.

4. STEADFASTNESS

It has become an unfortunate norm that relationships no longer last long. Even when the relationship has advanced to a marriage of the two consenting individuals, it is still a very likely possibility that the marriage could be annulled for flimsy reasons.

That loyalty in the face of trouble and difficulty is almost nonexistent in today’s relationships. With a TRUE godly relationship founded on the solid rock of God’s word, there is no need to fear that the house would collapse if the storms come. Matthew 7:24-25 (KJV) says;

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”

This is because such relationships are firm in purpose and therefore spiritually established. Such relationships are unwavering in conviction and love because they have made a commitment to remain grounded, come rain come shine.

5. TRUSTWORTHINESS

A relationship founded on the tenets of true Christian principles where both partners make conscious efforts to abide by the scriptures in love and respect of their partners and God Almighty is sure to be filled with trust. In such a relationship, transparency and authenticity are some of the essential ingredients.

Being easily accessible, and open and the ability to be vulnerable and authentic with each other are major characteristics of a TRUE godly relationship. A relationship with such a level of trust is tempting, isn’t it?

6. ACCOUNTABILITY

Sometimes the reason why some relationships fail is merely because they had no one to talk to as a unit. In a TRUE godly relationship, the partners stay accountable to God, His word and even his ordained ministers. There are some relationships today where they refuse to be accountable to anyone but themselves.

Proverbs 11:14 says;

“Where there is no guidance a people fails, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety”.

In a true Christian relationship, it is expected that both partners belong to Christ-centered congregations and in these congregations, it is expected that there are respectable couples seasoned with experience in Bible-based relationships. Such couples could serve as mentors guiding your relationship and point you towards the right direction when the shadows seem to mislead you.

You might not always like to hear what these people have to say because you might have been blinded by our natural human desires but they ensure, at all costs that we are redirected to the cross and make sure the partners are constantly applying the word of God in their relationship.

Only a few benefits of a godly relationship have been highlighted in this article but isn’t it so beautiful already? You deserve one exactly like it!
