A Stroke of Courage
Riley has been a talented bass guitarist ever since she first laid her hands on a bass guitar by accident at the age of eight. It all happened during a family vacation. Riley got separated from her parents and, by chance, found herself in a music store. Curious, she reached for a kiddie bass guitar and began to play.
The people in the store were amazed by her playing, calling her the little Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, the bassist who played a crucial role in shaping the sound of one of the most iconic bands of the 1990s. They said she would become a new inspiration for the next generation.
The store owner soon came over to Riley.
“Hey, little girl, what is your name, and who is your bass teacher?” he asked.
He quickly assumed Riley had been mentored by a renowned bassist for a long time, probably since she could hold a spoon. While he was lost in thought, Riley finally replied, “Hello, sir, my name is Riley.”
Everyone waited eagerly for her to reveal who her teacher was, hoping to get his or her contact information for their own children. To their surprise, Riley, looking embarrassed by all the staring eyes, replied softly, “I don’t have a teacher, and this is my first time holding a bass guitar. Although I usually listen to some uncles playing from my window back home, you could say I’m self-taught.”
As soon as she said this, sounds of astonishment filled the store. Others couldn’t contain themselves and lashed out.
“This little girl is definitely lying. How could she be self-taught?”
“Absolutely impossible. To attain this level at such a young age without a teacher is completely unheard of,” another said.
As the discussion continued, a sudden shout rang out from the doorway of the store.
“Riley!”
A man and a woman stormed into the store, rushing toward the little girl. The man grabbed her by the arm. “How many times have I told you to stop running around? Why can’t you be obedient?”
The woman stepped forward and bent down to her. “Riley, baby, why did you run off? Do you know how worried mummy and daddy were? What if we couldn’t find you? What would we do?” She pulled Riley into a tight hug, crying.
The little girl apologized to her parents, explaining that she only wanted to try the instrument and never meant to worry them.
At last, the onlookers reacted to the scene. An old woman stepped forward. “Sir, ma’am, is this your daughter? She is very talented with the bass guitar, and I was wondering if I could get her teacher’s contact information.”
Seeing the confused looks on their faces, she quickly added, “Don’t worry about the cost. I can afford it for such an amazing teacher. My grandson is currently interested in learning, and it would be wonderful if he could be even half as talented as your daughter.”
Others chimed in as well. “Yes, me too. I also want the number.”
Riley’s parents exchanged dazed looks before turning to her and then to the crowd. “Our daughter played what? She has never touched any musical instrument apart from the flute since she was born. What are you all talking about? Which teacher’s phone number?”
The entire store fell into an awkward silence.
Finally, someone spoke up. “Sir, are you sure she hasn’t touched a bass guitar before? She just played a piece, and it was nothing short of amazing.”
Everyone stared at the couple, their expressions strange and uncertain. Riley then spoke up softly, “I really haven’t studied this before.”
Seeing that the family of three were serious, everyone began to believe them and started praising Riley’s parents.
“You both are very lucky. Your daughter is a natural talent.”
“She would do very well in the music industry. Natural talents are very rare these days.”
“I can give you a bassist’s contact information to better guide her. There is always room for improvement,” others chimed in cheerfully.
Riley’s father suddenly shouted, “My daughter will be no music player. She will grow up to be a reputable lawyer. You can keep your goodwill to yourselves.”
He pulled his wife and daughter along as they left the store.

On the way home, Riley’s father lectured her to focus on her studies and to erase what had happened from her memory. Although Riley insisted that she loved playing the instrument, her father rejected the idea outright and dismissed it, making it clear that it was never to be brought up again.
After returning from the family vacation, Riley began secretly practicing the bass guitar, determined to perfect different styles of playing. She studied the techniques of legendary bassists, from John Entwistle, known for his aggressive yet melodic style, to Les Claypool, famous for his quirky and innovative approach that blended rock, funk, and psychedelia, along with many other iconic bassists.
Although Riley was excelling in her musical pursuits without her family’s knowledge, she performed poorly in her studies and barely managed to graduate from high school. Under pressure from her father, she was placed on a career path toward becoming a lawyer in college. Deep down, however, she knew it would not be possible. She needed an outlet to prove to her father that being a musician was the right path for her. She had no interest in becoming a lawyer, and studying so hard was starting to take a toll on her mental health. Music, on the other hand, brought her joy.
While practicing in secret, Riley’s friends handed her an audition flyer for a competition hosted by a famous band looking for a bassist. Excited, they told her, “Riley dear, haven’t you been looking for a way to show your father how good being a bassist can be? Why not compete in this competition and win? Then your father will see that being a bassist is an appreciated career in the world. You don’t have to worry about anything, we’ve already registered you.”
Riley was shocked. She exclaimed, “What did you say you did? What competition? What if my father finds out about this? Are you trying to get me beaten up?”
Her friends looked startled. “We didn’t mean it that way. We just thought it would be a golden opportunity for you. We’re sorry.”
Riley calmed down, knowing her friends meant well. That was why they had done it. “It’s okay. I know you meant well.”
“So, will you participate?” they asked. “As long as you don’t get caught, everything will be fine. And after you win, your dad will be so proud of you.”
Riley laughed. “Silly. How are you guys so sure that I can win?”
“Are you kidding me? Don’t you know your own talent? Or is it that the great bassist Riley is unsure of herself?” they teased.

On the day of the competition, Riley was getting ready to leave for the venue when her father suddenly entered the house. Confused and nervous that he had returned so early, she hurriedly packed her things and claimed she was going to see a friend who was seriously sick. With that, she rushed out of the house as if it were on fire.
Unknowingly, she dropped the audition flyer. Her father picked it up, and as he read through it, his face grew angrier. “So this is the reason she has been deliberately failing in school,” he muttered. The truth, however, was that Riley was not the book-smart type. Some children simply have special talents and are not suited for traditional schooling, but some parents cannot accept this, believing such talents are irrelevant in society.
Following the address on the flyer, Riley’s father found the audition venue. He went backstage to meet the contestants and spotted Riley preparing to go on stage. Gritting his teeth, he said, “No daughter of mine will stand on a stage and be watched like a clown.”
He tried to stop her, but Riley was determined. Even when he threatened to disown her, she cried and pleaded with him to let her perform just once. She begged him to watch her play, promising that he would change his mind. She assured him that she was truly talented and asked him to give her a chance.
Furious, he slapped her and told her to behave and leave with him. He turned and walked away, then noticed Riley was not following. He turned back and saw her standing on stage, ready to play.
He was shocked by what he heard. He could not believe it was Riley playing. He looked toward the judges and the audience and saw everyone frozen, staring straight ahead. He turned his gaze back to Riley and watched her perform.
When her performance ended, a deafening silence filled the room. Then came thunderous applause.
From the stage, Riley could see her friends cheering loudly, along with her secret teacher, Marcus. To her surprise, she also spotted her father and mother, who had arrived at some point, watching her with proud eyes. Feeling fulfilled, she smiled at the crowd and walked backstage.
Unsurprisingly, Riley emerged as the winner. The judges praised her originality, confidence, and natural command of the bass, and she was offered a place in the famous band. As she accepted the prize, the applause felt distant compared to the weight lifting off her chest. For the first time, her future felt like something she had chosen for herself.
Later that evening, Riley met with her parents. The joy on her face slowly faded when she saw her father’s conflicted expression. He did not congratulate her right away. Instead, he sat quietly, his eyes fixed on the floor. After a long silence, he finally spoke.
“I wanted you to have a stable life,” he said. “I thought music would only bring hardship. I was wrong to think talent like yours was meaningless.”
He did not fully understand her world, and he did not suddenly become supportive overnight, but this time, he did not forbid her either. That was enough. Riley nodded, holding back tears. For the first time, she felt heard.
That night, Riley picked up her bass guitar and played freely, not in secret, and not in fear. The sound filled the room, steady and confident, just like her heart. She knew the road ahead would not be easy, but it would be hers.
Riley learned that education is important, but so is passion. And sometimes, the greatest success comes from choosing the path that allows you to become who you truly are.
