Young Nigerian Job Seeker, Hinny Inibong Umoren, Raped and Murdered In Akwa-ibom
A young Nigerian woman named Hinny Inibong Umoren cried out on Twitter less than a week ago. Her tweets read: #AwkaIbomTwitter please I am really in need of a job, something to do to keep mind and soul together while contributing dutifully to the organization. My location is Uyo. I am creative, really good in thinking critically and most importantly a fast learner. CV available on request”.
Who is Hinny?
Hinny (Iniubong) is a recent graduate from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. The above tweet was what opened her up to danger. On the 29th of April 2021, Hinny left her house to meet one Uduak Frank Akpan who asked her to come over for an interview.
Unfortunately, this interview turned out to be fake. The suspect who is from Nung Ikot reportedly runs a crime syndicate with other members of his family. On her way to the scene of the drive, the deceased had taken security measures but they all proved futile. Before she was killed, she was allegedly taken to the suspects home where an argument ensued.
The last communication anyone had with her was a panicked voice note which she sent to her friend before the incident. As soon as the news went viral, Nigerians in their benevolence rallied around and began to gather information on the matter. In their determination to uncover the crime, they bypassed the authorities and the stipulated 48 hours wait. Their efforts yielded powerful results and the suspect was caught.
Hinny was found dead and buried in a shallow grave that contained a few more corpses. At the moment, the investigation is ongoing as more details unfold. Nigerians are scared that justice will be obstructed because the suspect, Uduak Frank Akpan is allegedly related to a Local Government Chairman.
Hinny’s family members are agitating for the body of the deceased. The policeman in their most recent video urged them to be patient while the autopsy is carried out as it would aid in the investigation. #JusticeforHinnyUmoren is trending on Nigerian Twitter. While grieving the death of one of their own, Nigerians share pictures of her suspected killer. They also drop valuable advice so other young people will not fall victim to such fraudulent schemes.
Unfortunately, what happened to Iniubong is not an isolated issue. Nigerian women continually live in fear of their lives. The fear of rape and death is a tangible part of the life of the average Nigerian woman. Nowhere is safe and with the unreliability of the security agencies, these women are left with no choice but to either die or die in silence.
The issue of unemployment was another big catalyst for the death of Hinny. Nigeria is a country with a huge population of youth and most of these youngsters are educated but unemployed. The unemployment rate rises as more graduates are poured out of tired schools into the general society. The more idle youth, the more criminals are produced each year.
The lack of jobs creates a desperation that drove Hinny and still drives thousands like her to their possible demise. The police are still investigating the case and we all have our fingers crossed. Rest In Peace Hinny, you are all of us.
