Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner died on Sunday, 20th of July, 2025, following an accidental drowning during a family trip to Costa Rica.
According to CNN, he was swimming at Playa Grande in Limon Province when a strong current pulled him deeper into the water. It was reported that there were no lifeguards on site as they were diverted to nearby beaches, where near-drowning incidents were also being reported. All efforts to rescue and save Warner’s life proved unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Costa Rican authorities confirmed the cause of death as “asphyxiation by submersion.”
His death is a huge loss to not just his family but also the entertainment industry, as he was an integral member of Black cultural storytelling.
Born on August 18th, 1970, Warner’s acting career kicked off in 1982 when he first appeared in an episode of the series “Matt Huston” and “Fame” the following year.
He landed his role as Theo Huxtable in “The Cosby Show” in 1984, which captured the hearts of many and earned him an Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a comedy series. Warner also featured in the sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie” and the BET sitcom “Reed Between the Lines” as Dr. Alex Reed. He starred in several other television series, including “The Michael J. Fox Show,” “Key & Peele,” “American Horror Story,” and “Sons of Anarchy” in 2014, as well as “Suits” and “American Crime Story” in 2016.

To the younger generation, he was known as Dr. A.J. Austin, a cocky but brilliant Cardiothoracic surgeon in the medical series “The Resident.”
Aside from being an actor, Warner was a musician and a poet. In 2003, He released his first EP titled “The Miles Long Mixtape” and another in 2007, which he titled “Love and Other Social Issues.” In 2015, he received a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his contribution to a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Jesus Children of America.” He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2023 for best spoken word poetry album for “Hiding In Plain View.”
He was dedicated to speaking up and creating awareness on issues affecting the Black community, especially mental health. He started the podcast “Not All Hood” with Candace Kelly in 2024, where they talked about mental health and other life experiences and challenges of the Black community.
Warner kept the identities of his immediate family private, but we know he was a husband and a father to one child.
The Resident Cast and Fans React to Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Sudden Death
The entertainment industry, from Warner’s colleagues to his fans, is grieving, and several tributes and adulations are pouring in.
Raven-Symoné, who starred alongside Warner on “The Cosby Show,” posted an Instagram video where she tried to express her grief in words.
“Words cannot describe the pain and sadness, and surprise I feel with the recent loss of MJW. He was the big brother. He was a beacon. He was one of the most multifaceted, talented men, so gentle. My heart and soul and hugs, and kisses go out to his daughter and his wife and his mother.“
Geoffrey Owens, a former cast member of The Cosby Show, said in a statement: “Malcolm was a lovely man; a sweet and sensitive soul. I respected him for many reasons, including the fact that he genuinely loved the act of creation. He had the mind of an actor and the heart of a musician. He was generous, too; I did a theatre project long ago and asked him to participate, and he was there for me. My heart goes out to his family.”
Shaunette Renée Wilson, who played Dr. Mina Okafor in The Resident, wrote a heartbreaking caption: “Last week I had the impulse to text you for one of our lengthy heart check-ins. I truly wish I had so that one of the last words I had of you was of your wisdom, kindness, and that uncanny ability you had to be both unserious and profound within a single sentence. Rest in Power, Malcolm. It was a joy to be Mina to your AJ.“
Morris Chestnut, who worked with Warner on “The Resident,” wrote: “Working alongside him on ‘The Resident’ was an honour. He brought so much depth, warmth, and wisdom to every scene and every conversation. One of the nicest in the business. Rest easy, brother. Your legacy lives on.”
Tracee Ellis Ross, who starred with Warner in “Reed Between the Lines,” posted some pictures of them together and wrote: “I love you, Malcolm. First, I met you as Theo with the rest of the world, then you were my first TV husband. My heart is so, so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, and elegant. You made the world a brighter place. Sending so much love to your family. I’m so sorry for this unimaginable loss.“
Beyoncé has dedicated the front page of her website to the late Cosby Show actor. The message on the homepage reads: “Rest in power, Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Thanks for being a big part of our shared television history. You will be missed.”
The world mourns the loss of this great man who was not just an actor, poet or musician. He was a man who used every platform and opportunity he got to rewrite the narrative of the Black community.
