The Jada Pinkett Smith Memoir Controversy
Jada Pinkett Smith’s recent promotional interviews for her new memoir, “Worthy,” have ignited a media storm with their candid revelations. In her conversations with interviewers, Jada has opened up about various aspects of her life, particularly in regard to her marriage to Will Smith. And in typical Jada fashion, she has us all wondering “Should I really be hearing this?” But she wants us to know, so let’s break down all the things she said that have put the internet in a frenzy. Here are the highlights:
Jada Pinkett and Will Smith Divorce
In an exclusive clip from her prime-time special with Hoda Kotb, Jada disclosed that she and her husband Will Smith have been living “completely separate lives” since 2016, despite still being legally married. While they hadn’t officially divorced, Jada described their situation as a de facto divorce.
It was not a divorce on paper,” Kotb said to Jada in the interview.
“Right,” Pinkett Smith responded.
“…but it was a divorce,” Kotb continued.
“Divorce,” Pinkett Smith confirmed.
This means during the time of her famous entanglement with musician, August Alsina, the couple was technically separated.
This revelation left many questioning why they hadn’t shared their relationship status earlier, to which Jada explained they were trying to figure out how to present it to the public.
Chris Rock Apologized
Jada also discussed the incident at the 2022 Oscars when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in an interview with People magazine. She revealed that immediately after the slap, Chris Rock approached her to apologize.
“Chris came down to the end of the stage and tried to apologize to me,” Jada said. “He said, ‘I didn’t mean you any harm.’ I said, ‘I can’t talk about this now, Chris. This is some old shit.’ I thought this was [about] the Oscar 2016 and… their stuff that they had before I even came into the picture in the late ‘80s. I’ve got to leave that to Will and Chris to talk about, but they got their stuff for sure.”
By the “Oscars 2016” Jada was referring to her public protest of the 2016 Oscars during the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Chris also happened to be hosting that year and even made a joke about her protest. This caused some tension between the two but according to her, she assumed that they had squashed the beef. That was until Oscars 2022 and the now infamous “GI Jane” joke.
The actress also claimed that she originally thought the incident was a skit.
“I thought, ‘This is a skit,’” Jada said. “I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”
Chris Rock Asked Jada Out
In another surprising twist of events; Chris Rock once asked her out on a date during a time when there were rumors about an impending divorce between her and Will in the media. The comedian believed the rumors and made his move, which prompted an awkward conversation.
“I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce,” Jada said. “And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that.”
Jada Pinkett Smith and Tupac
Now let’s talk Tupac because we all know his name is never far from Jada’s lips. In an interview with Rolling Loud’s Christal Jordan, Jada delved into her relationship with the late Tupac Shakur. In which, she claimed that he was her “soulmate”.
While she recognized that the term “soulmate” can take various forms, she explained that their connection was more like that of soul-connected friends. Although they shared moments of romance, she emphasized that it never felt right romantically between them.
Jada Smith and Tupac’s Jail Proposal
Jada spoke recently on the Showtime Basketball podcast about the time that Tupac proposed to her while he was in jail.
Pinkett said, “2Pac proposed to me while he was in jail. I talk about this in my book when I go to see him in Rikers. When I wrote about that in the book and when I had to speak my words for the audio version of the book. That was probably one of the most painful parts.
“Seeing him there, the condition that he was in, and having to leave him there. He was in bad shape. And so, when he asked me to marry him, he was at Rikers. And I knew at that time that he needed somebody to spend time with him. Which I was going to do anyway. He doesn’t have to marry me to do time with me.”
These candid revelations have sparked intense debate and discussion on social media. While the information that Jada has shared is undoubtedly intriguing, it has also raised questions about the boundaries of privacy and her motivations behind such revelations. A lot of people believe that her biggest goal is to humiliate Will.
Although Will Smith did speak about their marital struggles in his 2021 book “Will”, his words were nowhere as controversial as hers.
