The Fight For Justice: Reopening the Case of Ochanya Ogbanje
Social Media Revives Ochanya Ogbanje’s Case
It is an irony to say Nigeria has the best justice laws in the world. The number of people who never got their deserved justice, both dead and alive, is very alarming. Let’s look at the case of Ochanya Elizabeth Ogbanje, which shook the entire internet since it came into the limelight. Surprisingly, this case was not a recent occurrence but something that happened years ago.
However, with the influence of social media and the voices of the Gen Z youths, her case has been brought back to light. Ochanya, a young girl, was a victim of constant sexual assault by her relatives.
What Happened to Ochanya Ogbanje?
Here’s what happened a few years ago: Ochanya, an intelligent girl, was sent to her Aunt’s house by her parents, not to be a house help, but to continue her education. The reason was that the primary school she attended got shut down because the teachers went on strike citing delayed salary payment for a long time. Unknown to her parents they were sending her as a prey to the predators.
She started living with her aunt at 5 years old and at the age of 8 years, she was subjected to a series of molestation by the aunt’s son Victory Ogbuja, who constantly raped her, his sister Winifred Ogbuja later discovered this ordeal and reported to her father Andrew Ogbuja who was a lecturer at a state-owned polytechnic in Makodi, Benue state.
The father scolded the son after finding out, you might think this is where Ochanya’s sexual assault story ends but no, the father after scolding the son, followed down the same path, joining his son on a series assaults on Ochanya for a total of 5 long years. Shockingly, the aunt, who was aware of the abuse, did nothing to stop it. Ochanya endured years of this trauma until she became very ill.
Ochanya Ogbanje’s Death and Public Reactions
Ochanya later passed on after receiving treatment at a hospital for 2 months on October 17 2018. She died after she did an interview explaining in detail what happened to her, she was diagnosed with vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) and other related complications, which are common in people who have been repeatedly assaulted. Sadly, Ochanya died after a long battle.
Her death caused a public outcry, and activists demanded justice for Ochanya. The case was brought to court, and the parents wanted justice for their child. Unfortunately, the court ruled out the case of Mr Andrew Ogbuja due to technical errors, missing DNA evidence, and conflicting autopsy reports, two reports were presented to the Judge one from the police station and another from the hospital where she was being treated.
The son Victor Ogbuja fled immediately and was missing since the incident happened until now. The Aunt, Felicia Ogbuja was sentenced to 5 months in prison because of negligence and that was how the case ended on 28 April 2022.

As recorded, the perpetrators were initially arrested and charged, but the justice system failed to hold them accountable. However, thanks to social media and the power of Nigerian Gen Z voices, the case has been reopened.
There’s even a bounty on the suspects, yet their whereabouts remain unknown. If you happen to see or recognize them, please report immediately. You can contact us online or reach out to any of the kind individuals who have offered a reward for information. Your action could make all the difference in bringing justice to victims like Ochanya.
Many youths and organizations have refused to let Ochanya’s story be forgotten. They continue to fight for justice and ensure that those who commit such crimes face the consequences of their actions.
A Call for Action: Justice Should Not Be Delayed
Ochanya’s story, much like that of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, is a heartbreaking reminder of the injustice that continues to haunt victims of sexual violence in Nigeria. These cases highlight the urgent need for a justice system that is swift, fair, and protective of the vulnerable.
The reopening of Ochanya’s case shines a light on what people can achieve when they speak up. It shows that when the voices of the youth grow louder than the silence of corruption, change becomes possible. But the fight cannot end here. Every tragic story like Ochanya’s must push us to demand better, so that justice is not just a hope, but a guarantee.

Together, we must continue to speak out, support the victims, and stand firm against these heinous acts. Justice delayed is justice denied; but justice delivered, gives hope to a nation.
