The 2026 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Key Moments from Morocco's Tournament

Quarterfinal Drama and Cultural Controversy at AFCON 2026

Here is all you thought you knew about the 2026 African Cup of Nations held in Morocco, but didn’t. The tournament was organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with 24 countries participating. The quarterfinals consisted of eight top teams: Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.

At this stage of the tournament, things became more interesting. An Algerian player, Mohamed Amoura, mocked a Congolese fan who always stands for the full 90 minutes, with one arm at his side and the other extended outward in honor of Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of Congo and a freedom fighter. The fan’s gesture symbolizes standing from the beginning of marches to the very end. After celebrating a goal, the Algerian player made a gesture mimicking the fan falling down.

After the match, in which Algeria emerged victorious, the incident caused a global outcry, with many demanding that the Algerian player apologize for his disrespect toward the Congolese fan. Mohamed Amoura later apologized, saying,

I wasn’t aware of what the person in the stands represented. I simply wanted to joke around in a childlike spirit, with no bad intention or desire to provoke anyone. I respect Congo and its team and hope they qualify for the World Cup. If my attitude may have been misunderstood, I sincerely regret it because it was absolutely not my intention.

The Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria, and Egypt teams made their way to the semi-finals, with Senegal playing against Egypt and Nigeria facing Morocco. Senegal won 1 – 0 against Egypt through a goal by Sadio Mané. Nigeria and Morocco played out a full-time 0 – 0 draw, moving on to a penalty shootout, with Morocco emerging as the winner.

AFCON 2026 Final Controversy and Senegal’s Historic Victory

Senegal and Morocco advanced to the final, which ended 1 – 0 after intense back-and-forth play throughout the match. In the 90th minute, Senegal scored what was initially ruled a goal but was later disallowed by the referee. A foul was deemed to have been committed against Morocco, as confirmed by the referee after careful consideration and a VAR review, resulting in a penalty kick for Morocco. Senegal found it absurd that their goal was canceled without what they felt was equal scrutiny, while the foul was reviewed and awarded a penalty.

In protest, the Senegal coach called for all the team’s players to leave the pitch, stating they would not continue the match. The players headed toward the dressing room until Mané urged them to return and finish the match, which they eventually did.

The penalty kick was taken, but the Moroccan player sent the ball straight into the arms of the Senegal goalkeeper. With the match still level at 0 – 0, the fighting spirit of both teams was reignited. During extra time, Pape Gueye scored Senegal’s winning goal, securing the AFCON 2026 title.

All this happened amid conspiracies and allegations that AFCON 2026 was rigged by host country Morocco, as suggested in various matches, particularly those against Nigeria and Senegal. Did you watch the 2026 AFCON matches?
