Tanzania President’s Tongue Slip Turns Into Viral Beat With Shocking Consequences

A beat track made from a mistake in a speech by the new Tanzanian president has been spreading online, and her reaction to this viral track has shocked many people. Samia Suluhu Hassan became President of Tanzania on 19 March 2021, taking over after the death of John Pombe Magufuli. She served for 4 years and 8 months and was re-elected on 29 October 2025.

During her swearing-in speech on 3 November 2025, she slipped her tongue and said the word “NYWINYWINYWYI.” Tanzanians quickly turned this slip into a trending beat on social media. However, a street vendor who played the viral song and danced to it on TikTok has been arrested along with others for treason, facing a possible death penalty by hanging.

A Viral TikTok Clip, Rising Public Anger, and Growing Fears in Tanzania

Jenifer Bilikwiza John, popularly known as Niffer, a 31-year-old TikTok creator, posted the viral video. She and many others have been arrested, and this has pushed citizens into deep anger. The song was tagged as a mockery of the President, and shortly after, TikTok was banned in Tanzania. Now, many Tanzanians have to use a VPN to access the app so they can share what is happening in their country and beg the public to help stop the death penalty for Niffer and the others.

The situation has also placed the Tanzanian President in a negative light, especially because the recent election was highly controversial. Several major candidates were either jailed or disqualified, leaving only small parties in the race. Tundu Lissu of the CHADEMA party was disqualified for not signing the required electoral code of conduct and later arrested for treason. Luhaga Mpina of the ACT-Wazalendo party was also disqualified for violating his own party’s nomination rules because he had not been a member long enough.

With the major opposition candidates removed, President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s victory became almost certain. Now that she has resumed office, the situation in Tanzania is changing quickly, and many citizens are becoming more fearful of what comes next.

Nigerians React Online as the Controversy Spreads Across Africa

Nigerian youths, after seeing another African country being suppressed, and driven by their love for Afrobeats, took to social media to dance to the same viral track that led to the arrest of Niffer and 21 others. All of them have been charged with treason and may face the death penalty by hanging.

Nigerian youths are boldly challenging the power of President Samia Suluhu Hassan online, asking what Tanzania can possibly do to citizens of another country. Many are also questioning whether a simple beat track should receive such harsh and extreme punishment.

This situation has now grown beyond a local issue and has become a major topic across Africa. What began as a small tongue slip has turned into a national crisis, raising serious questions about freedom of expression, political power, and the future of digital rights in Tanzania.

As more Africans speak up online, many are watching to see if the voices of the people can actually change the fate of the arrested creators, or whether this moment will mark a darker turn for the country’s democracy.
