Rihanna to be honoured with the President’s Award at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards

As seen on Wikipedia, “The NAACP Image Award is an annual awards ceremony presented by the U.S.-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to honor outstanding performances in film, television, music, and literature.”

Among the different categories present in the NAACP awards, the President’s award is one of the most outstanding. The President’s award is given by the NAACP president to a person in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service.

Beneficiaries of this award include notable personalities like Spike Lee, John Legend, Bill Clinton, Lauryn Hill, T.D. Jakes, Muhammad Ali, Ella Fitzgerald, Jesse Jackson, Venus William’s, Serena Williams, Ruby Dee, Daniel Glover, and several others.

Since its inception in 1987, 38 people have been honored with the President’s award. Rihanna is set to be the 39th.

The 31-year-old pop star and fashion icon will be awarded for her “groundbreaking career as an artist and musician, and for being someone who has also distinguished herself as a stellar public servant.” This is as stated by Derrick Johnson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the NAACP. He also says “From her business achievements through [her cosmetics line] Fenty, to her tremendous record as an activist and philanthropist, Rihanna epitomizes the type of character, grace, and devotion to justice that we seek to highlight in our President’s Award.”

Robyn Rihanna Fenty, over the past twenty years, has released eight studio albums, two compilation albums, two remix albums, one reissue, and 71 singles (including 18 as a featured artist). Over the years, she has also sold over 280 million records and singles. With nine Grammys to her name, Rihanna is considered one of the world’s most successful artists.

Rihanna’s music career is not the only thing she is successful at. She also went ahead to launch a number of companies. Fenty Beauty, her cosmetics line which has accumulated revenue of over $570 million in its two years of existence. As if that was not enough, she also owns Savage X Fenty, a lingerie line, and also a fashion line with LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), the world’s largest luxury group.

Despite her success as a businesswoman, Rihanna is still actively involved in social activism and philanthropy. To this end, she founded a foundation- The Clara Lionel Foundation, a nonprofit organization created in honor of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite. The organization is committed to aiding communities through healthcare and education. The Clara Lionel Foundation also supports and funds groundbreaking and effective education, health and emergency response programs around the world. With the voices of Rihanna and her fans, CLF also engages in global advocacy with the goal of improving the quality of life for young people everywhere. – Fenty
