Nigerian Women Making History in 2022

Nigerian women

In honor of Tobi Amusan’s amazing athletic feat, we decided to honor the great Nigerian women breaking global and international records in their own ways.

Here is a list of Nigerian females who have made history this year.

Tems

The beautiful Afro, soul and RnB singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems stunned the world with her amazing and unique vocals in late 2020 on the Wizkid song Essence. Since then, she’s gone on to receive more recognition and break records.

2022 has been an exceptionally great year for the young musician, becoming the first Nigerian artist to debut No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her feature on Future’s ‘Wait For U’ in May.

In June she won the Best International Act at the BET Awards. Becoming the first Nigerian and African female musician to receive this award.

In July, after receiving songwriting credit on Beyonce’s soon-to-be-released album, ‘Renaissance’, the black panther 2 trailer dropped. The emotional promo clip had Tems in the background giving a soulful rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘No woman no cry’.

Just yesterday she made it again onto Obama’s summer playlist for the second time, with her song “Vibe out” from the “If orange was a place” EP. And she got nominated in “best hip hop” category in the VMAs 2022.

Yes, 2022 has been an exceptional year for this exceptionally talented woman.

Asisat Oshoala

The talented super Falcons striker and Barcelona’s star girl, Asisat Oshoala is known as one the best African players in the world.

The highest goal scorer of her Barcelona team, she won the golden boot in May as the top scorer in the women’s Spanish Primera Division with Barcelona Femeni. Amazing feat considering that she missed a number of high priority matches due to injury.

She also became the first African woman to win the award.

This July, Oshoala was crowned 2022 CAF Women’s ‘Player of the Year’ for a record fifth time. Surpassing the former record holder Perpetua Nkwocha, who is also Nigerian.

At just 27 years old, she is now Africa’s most decorated female footballer and she’s just getting started.

Tiwa Savage

Tiwa… sorry, I mean Dr Savage, is one of Nigeria’s top rated artists. But did you know the former queen of Mavins, is also the queen of many firsts?

In November 2018, Savage won Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards. Making her the first African woman to receive this award, etching her foot print in music history.

She also made history in 2012, becoming the first African female artist signed to Pepsi. The first female ambassador for Star Radler in 2019. And as of 2022, she’s the first Nigerian female ambassador for Techno.

She graced the cover of billboard magazine in their first issue dedicated to Africa and is the most followed African musician on Instagram.

Tiwa was one of the first Nigerian female artists to acquire global acclaim, paving the way for newer acts like Tems and Ayra. And with the latest news that she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree at the University of Kent, it reminds us of all the reasons why we need to put some respect on her name.

In her words, “And some call me queen but it’s Dr. Savage from now on.”

Nigeria Women’s Relay Team

Fortunately, Tobi Amusan isn’t the only Nigerian making us proud in the World Championships in Oregon. An honorable mention has to go to Ese Brume, for her silver medal in long jump. She became the first Nigerian athlete to win medals at two World Athletics Championships. Though her win has been largely shadowed by Amusan’s she’s also the reason why Nigeria got two medals this year.

And finally we must commend, Joy Udo-Gabriel, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha the members of Nigeria’s Female relay team who broke the 30-year-old African Record.

This was the first time in 11 years the Nigerian female relay team participated. They made a time of 42.22s breaking the long-standing 42.39s National/African Record. This record was also set by the Nigerian team which at the time consisted of Christy Opara-Thompson, Faith Idehen, Beatrice Utondu and Mary Onyali, at the Barcelona 92 Olympics where Nigeria left with a bronze medal.

Sadly, this record didn’t get them a medal this time as they came fourth. They were behind the United States that won gold and Jamaica and Germany that finished second and third respectively.

Regardless, we are very proud of what they achieved. And we stan the amazing women that represented Nigeria at the World Championships in Oregon, 2022.

Seven months into the year and these females have already stunned us. Can’t wait to see what the remainder has in store.
