Nigerian Doctor, Onyema Ogbuagu, Receives Recognition for Developing Covid-19 Vaccine

The United States, the U.N. Mission Nigeria, Valentine Ozigbo of Transcorp plc, and the Director-General of the NCDC amongst several others join other local bodies and professional experts both on the local and international front, to recognize the indelible efforts of Nigerian-born Yale scientist and medical doctor for researching and producing a covid -19 vaccine under a one-year neck-breaking period.

Dr. Onyema Ogbuagu is amongst a team of top researchers for Pfizer which recently announced with biontech that a covid-19 vaccine has already been developed. This vaccine tops all the others because it has over 95% efficacy with a successful test on over 43,500 people in six countries across the world.

Dr. Onyema has left an intelligent mark on the enclaves of history especially with his work in the field of medicine with research for the coronavirus.

Recently in an interview with ABC News, Ogbuagu confirmed his position with Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine. In reaction to this, several bodies and organizations have doffed their hats in recognition of his contribution.

The US Mission Nigeria in a tweet expressed that while Onyema’s feat is commendable, he’d be joining the list of other incredible Nigerians who have contributed their quota one way or the other to the world at large.

Valentine Ozigbo, CEO of Transcorp Plc in an interview with guardian news revealed that:

“I am so proud of him… when news of the highly effective vivid-19 vaccine broke, I had a feeling that Nigerian brains were part of it… Onyema Ogbuagu affirmed my conviction

The Nigerian center for disease control also had something to say by commending Dr. Onyema on his efforts in meticulously researching and providing the long-awaited medical breakthrough. Stating that, despite the imminent challenge in the country, Nigerians have been well trained through their educational system to contribute and intervene globally to the world crisis.

Some Facts About Dr. Onyema Ogbuagu

Dr. Ogbuagu graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of Calamari in 2003, then migrated to the U. S where he rose to the ranks of associate professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Yale school of medicine.

Born to Nigerian parents, his father, Chibuzo Ogbuagu was the former vice-chancellor of Abia State University. His mother, Stella Ogbuagu, also a professor of sociology graduated with honors at the top of her class.

After completing his education at the University of Calamari, he joined the Mount Sinai School of Medicine for his residency in 2010 and also the Yale school of medicine fellowship (2012).

To date, he’s received numerous international honors and recognition.

Onyema is a researcher, clinical educator, and medical Doctor who has spent the better part of his career integrating solutions to the world infectious diseases like Ebola, Hiv/Aids, and the coronavirus.
