Nigeria Lawmaker Proposes to Change Nigeria’s Name to United African Republic (UAR) Amidst Uproar And Reactions

Nigeria, constitution, lawmakers, house of representatives, colonialism, United African Republic (UAR),

Quick question: if a person who is from Nigeria is called a Nigerian, an individual who is from UAR would be called what? A Uranian? Lol

It is no longer news that the politicians of the federal republic of Nigeria have reserved rights to function optimally in their place and position of office. They have relegated their duties and focus from pressing matters of the nation’s dilapidating economy, problems of insecurity, and their law making abilities to some others, while they busy themselves with a newfound craze of Country-naming, amidst plenty other extravaganzas.

However, their ability to show up with new irrelevant solutions that manifest nothing in the future solutions of the country never ceases to amaze every Nigerian. The most recent of their attempts to reload their Arsenal’s up their sleeves can be found in their proposal received by the Lawmakers.

Well, as this is not an opinion article, I would help provide you with the direct facts.

On Wednesday, 2nd of June, 2021. The house of representatives’ special committee on Constitutional Review received a proposal to change Nigeria’s name to the United African Republic.

This proposal was submitted by None other than Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant to the committee at the southwest zonal public hearing in Lagos as Pulse news reports.

Adeleye Jokotoye reserves good reasons for doing so, as he claims that the reason for such a suggestion to have Nigeria changed to the “United African Republic” or preferably “United Alkebulan Republic” (UAR) is because the name “Nigeria” was an imposition of its past colonial masters, and as such, suggests an insipid strangulation to ourselves.

He asserts that this naming from the colonialist has left a form of psychological and emotional detachment to the country’s growth, hence it needs to be changed. He emphasized that this would be timely as it would usher in a new beginning.

Following his words, the tax consultant also suggested amendments to the constitution to reflect fiscal federalism, state or regional resource and taxation control, removal of immunity clause, and review of the Exclusive Legislative List.

In his own words:
“At this crossroads in our history, it is mandatory that we change our name to reflect a new beginning which will be ushered in with a new constitution,”

Jokototoye also explained that he chose ‘United Africa Republic’ because the country is made up of hundreds of ethnic groups that need to be United, and that one should never bear the name of its colonial oppressors.

He also suggested an alternative, ‘United Alkebulan Republic’ (Alkebulan means ‘mother of mankind’).

Despite the good structure and thoughts behind this proposal, many Nigerians have received this news with mixed reactions. Expressing their opinions freely on the bird app. Below are some of their reactions to the new country naming proposal:

Nigerians React to the Proposal to Change the Country’s Name to UAR

“Must have thought United in the name makes the country rich. United African Republic (UAR) like the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, United States. Lol. Someone spent weeks working on that idea. Probably even got a grant. Lol. I am tired.”

“So our problem as a country is how to change name from Nigeria to United African Republic. This is the height of madness.”

“Changing the name Nigeria to United African Republic makes no difference or significant impact to present day Nigeria. It’s just like moving from APC to PDP, different brand, same people… I.e New wine in an old bottle or rather, old bottle in new wine!”

“Renaming the country United African Republic will not change anything. People just want security, light, good roads, and a working economy. Is that too much to ask for?”

“United African Republic (UAR).
In their thinking, “United” is the reason the United States of America is progressing? Nigeria has no business with a bicameral legislature. It’s too expensive, a waste of scarce resources. The Senate is enough.”
