Nationwide Panic Ensues With The Recent Exposure of Fake Products in Nigeria

Fake Products in Nigeria

In a recent crackdown, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) successfully intercepted counterfeiters operating in Eziukwu Market (Cemetery Market) in Aba, Abia State.

Acting on intelligence gathered over several weeks, NAFDAC, in collaboration with other security agencies, conducted a sting operation to dismantle the criminal activities taking place in the market.

According to Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, the counterfeiters operated as a cartel, posing a long-standing threat to anyone challenging their illicit operations. Over 240 shops turned factories were raided, where counterfeit beverages, including various wines and soft drinks, were being produced and marketed.

The counterfeiters engaged in nefarious activities such as manufacturing adulterated products from well-known brands, revalidating expired products and using harmful chemicals. The extensive operation resulted in the closure of the entire market for regulatory activities until stakeholders committed to preventing such activities in the future.

What Happened to The Fake Products in Nigeria

During the operation on Monday, December 18, 2023, more than 1500 cartons of fake and substandard products, with an estimated street value of over seven hundred and fifty million naira (N750,000,000), were destroyed. Ten individuals were arrested at the scene and will face charges following a thorough investigation.

Since then, Nigerians have been in panic and have taken to various social media platforms to express their fears and worries about the mass consumption of fake drinks.

Risks Involved in Consuming The Fake Products in Nigeria

Consuming these fake products in Nigeria poses severe risks, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and even death. Adulterated alcohol can lead to kidney and liver failure, and substances like methanol in fake vodka may cause permanent blindness. Global reports indicate that alcohol poisoning claims more than three million lives worldwide, with a significant portion attributed to adulterated alcohol.

NAFDAC advises consumers to remain vigilant, especially during the festive season, and offers the following tips to identify genuine products:

Price: Be cautious if the product is significantly below its normal price or lacks standard taxes on liquors. Most fake drinks are usually cheaper than the original drinks.

Place: Buy only NAFDAC-registered drinks from reputable and licensed retailers, bars, and supermarkets to avoid buying fake drinks.

Packaging: Look out for poor-quality packaging and spelling mistakes. You should also inspect the seal on the bottle for any signs of interference.

Product: Watch out for bad smells, as products smelling like paint stripper or nail polish remover are likely fake.

Final Thoughts

By raising awareness and urging consumers to scrutinize branded drinks and other consumables, NAFDAC aims to combat the production and distribution of counterfeit products, safeguarding public health and well-being. However, the ball isn’t entirely in their court. You also have a part to play as a citizen and as a consumer.

When you notice any illegal activity going on in your area, speak up and report it to the relevant authorities. You should also be very cautious about the products you buy. If possible, tear off the wrapper because some people have discovered other brand wrappers under popular brands’ products.

Aside from the issue of fake products, there have also been cases of people suffering health complications after eating in local restaurants and canteens.

Recently, a young man was reportedly admitted to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), awaiting surgery and tissue expansion after eating hypo-infused fufu from a buka in Lagos.

The victim’s friend took to X to report the tragic incident, further notifying netizens that the victim had to take drip constantly for two weeks to flush the toxins away from his system.

This Christmas season, try to eat more home-cooked meals, only visit reputable restaurants, and buy products from trusted brands. Stay safe and enjoy a very healthy Christmas with your families!
