Meghan Markle Publishes Essay On Miscarriage, Suffers Backlash on Social Media

Meghan Markle is a member of the British Royal Family and the wife of Prince Harry. Today, Meghan Markle, who is also the famous Duchess of Sussex, got an article published in the New York Times titled “The Losses We Share” read the full article here. In this article, she tells us about her experience in July, when she lost her second child. According to her, it was a terrible, heart-rending experience.

“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few.”

Markle explores the topic of the taboo associated with miscarriages. “In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage.” she wrote, “Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning.”

There has been a strong reaction to the release of Meghan’s article. Women are speaking up and there has been an increase in calls to helplines and charity supports. Many women on social media have made posts, thanking the Duchess for writing such a brave piece. Pointing out that when they suffered from miscarriages, they had nowhere to go for relatable information.

@anitathetweeter tweeted: “When I had a miscarriage, I remember scouring the internet for articles by women who had been through the same thing. Because reading that you’re not alone is helpful and it’s comforting. So thank you to Meghan Markle for writing about something so difficult”

As though forecasting the public reaction to her article, the Duchess of Sussex wrote:

“On top of all of this, it seems we no longer agree on what is true. We aren’t just fighting over our opinions of facts; we are polarized over whether the fact is, in fact, a fact. We are at odds over whether science is real. We are at odds over whether an election has been won or lost. We are at odds over the value of compromise.”

There have been various reactions to Meghan’s article, very few of them good. Yet, encouraging words stand out. Here are some of them that we found on the streets of Twitter.

“Meghan is using her platform to bring awareness to a tragedy experienced by so many yet not talked about. I’m sure so many women who experienced miscarriages who are lost and scared would take great comfort in this article, that’s who it’s for. Plus it’s something she wants to share.” by @buterasretro

“Too many women suffer the loss of miscarriage in private. I think this is something that needs to be spoken about publicly. Losing a baby makes a woman feel guilty and inadequate, in addition to the loss. I’m glad she did the article, and I hope it helps others.” by @Michelekm88

“As a doctor, I treated miscarriages as the loss of a pregnancy until we lost our first. It’s the loss of a child with dreams for the future dashed. After 4 losses and 3 healthy children, I am a much better doctor for my grieving patients. This piece will help so many. Thank you!” @DrRobDavidson

We join the world in expressing our deepest condolences with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on the loss of their baby. We wish them a smooth healing process.

Thank you for reading. Here’s an excerpt of Meghan’s article you should take with you. She wrote, “So this Thanksgiving, as we plan for a holiday unlike any before — many of us separated from our loved ones, alone, sick, scared, divided and perhaps struggling to find something, anything, to be grateful for — let us commit to asking others, “Are you OK?”

Have a nice day.
