Why King Charles’ Coronation Has Become All About Princess Diana

King Charles' coronation

King Charles was crowned the King of England this past Saturday in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The ancient ceremony was followed by a huge procession through London. Then there was the famous balcony wave at Buckingham Palace. The King’s celebration went without a hitch. But for some, King Charles’ Coronation wasn’t just about him.

Instead of celebrating this crowning, a lot of people are using this moment to remember his ex-wife, the popular and beloved, princess Diana as her name was one of the top trends on coronation day.

The People’s Princess

The former Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair was the first person to use that phrase in reference to Princess Diana; “the people’s princess”. Unfortunately, it was a name given to her in the wake of her death.

Tony Blair was tasked with the responsibility of giving a speech right after the news of her fatal car crash had just shocked the world.

“You know how difficult things were for her from time to time, I’m sure we could only guess at, but the people everywhere–not just here in Britain, everywhere–they kept faith with Princess Diana, ” Blair told reporters. “They liked her, they loved her, they regarded her as one of the people. She was the ‘People’s Princess.’ And that’s how she will stay, how she will remain, in our hearts and our memories, forever.”

And though she wasn’t even a royal at the time, that is how she will forever be known as the perfectly imperfect princess. Shy yet bold enough to stand up for herself, kind-hearted and gentle, a princess that we could relate to. And the entire British nation grieved her death.

People love to remember the late princess as you can see from the many biographies on her life and marriage and King Charles’ coronation was no different. Many people took to social media to express their solidarity with the one that will always be queen in their hearts.

It was especially tough for the many fans of Princess D to see Camilla (the other woman in her marriage) get crowned queen.

Princess Diana Didn’t Believe She Would Become Queen

In a 1995 interview with the BBC, as Diana spoke on her famously tumultuous marriage to the then Prince Charles and her complicated relationship with his royal family she spoke on her belief that she would never become queen.

“Do you think you will ever be Queen?”

No, I don’t, no.” She responded and then went on to say, “ I’d like to be a queen of people’s hearts, in people’s hearts, but I don’t see myself being Queen of this country. I don’t think many people will want me to be Queen. Actually, when I say many people I mean the establishment that I married into, because they have decided that I’m a non-starter.”

Well, if the attention she received on the coronation day is any indication, she definitely achieved what she intended. She truly is the Queen of many hearts.
