Economic Values Of The Big Brother Naija Reality Show
What have you heard about the Big brother Naija show? If you’re a die-hard fan 🤩 like and comment on this article. If you’re not and you want to know what all the fuss is about, keep reading. The big brother Naija show is a reality show of Nigerian origin. In this show, contestants live together in one house and compete for a cash price through votes and in-house tasks. Since its inception, there have been five seasons of the show.
If you are Nigerian/African, you probably know all that already so let’s just get into the meat of the matter. People ask a lot of questions about BBNaija every day and I’m just doing my quota, answering some of those questions. Here are a few advantages of this show 👇
High Revenue Generation
A reality show like Big brother Naija is like a gold mine for the organizers and the sponsors. Reality shows are generally cheaper to set up than movies and other scripted shows on TV because you don’t really have to pay your “actors” much and in the case of Big brother Naija where people are made to vote to keep their favs in the house, the profit is massive. Last year’s big brother Naija’s episode “pepper dem” was said to have attracted a total of 240 million votes which amounted to 7.2billion naira. Guess what? Every year it gets bigger and better.
Ease of Product Placement For Advertising
It is because of Big brother Naija that “BetWay” is running through my head so often. Before now, I never knew the brand but now I do. I even checked them out yesterday😁. There are other brands partnering with BBN to make the program come alive. These brands do this because advertising products on a reality show is so easy and can be done in such a subtle way that it leaves a lasting impression on the viewers’ mind.

Entertainment
Big brother Naija promises us three months of non-stop entertainment every year and they never disappoint. The ‘ships, the intrigue, the drama, is so much fun. The eviction suspense is enough to keep you on your toes (or on your knees praying for your favs) all week.
One beautiful thing about the show is that anything can happen at any time. You could just sleep for thirty minutes and when you wake up, Lilo and Brighto will be declaring undying love for each other😂. I must also say that so much entertainment is addictive. I’m sure that in these three months, a lot of us will not have a full night’s sleep.
A Platform To Showcase New Talent
When I think of talent in the present Big brother Naija show, I think of Laycon. That guy is good. I was watching one of his rap videos with my sibling and I shook my head and said so if there was no Big brother Naija, we wouldn’t have known this amazing talent. This goes to show that there are millions of young talented Nigerians who just need a platform, who need a spotlight so they can glow.
Seriously speaking, the Nigerian government should think about organizing a corruption-free talent hunt for young talented minds perhaps yearly. What do you think? The gains would surely outweigh the cost of such a program.

A Quick and Easy Route to Fame
There are thousands of young Nigerians who wish daily that they could be on the Big brother Naija show. Even if just to step inside the house and greet all the furniture. One day in the house and you’re already a millionaire in “influence coins”(made this up). You gain instant celebrity status.
If you doubt me, go on Instagram and check the profiles of some Big brother Naija housemates. Before entering the house, they had thousands of followers. Now? Their followers number in the hundreds of thousands and you know the biggest catch? Those followers are not going anywhere. Look at Mercy Eke and Tacha’s followers and how they show love to these two women daily. It is something to envy if we are being honest.
Gender Inclusivity
The Big brother Naija reality show is accepting of both the Male and female genders. This brings about balance and a whole lot more drama to the house. It also shows (as in the case of Pepper dem season) that women can also reach for the stars. Mercy Eke won last year, and since then she’s been doing really great. In the show, everyone has an equal opportunity to win, regardless of gender.
The Winner Takes The Huge Bag
The winner of last year’s season took home a whopping sum of, 30 million, an SUV, and various endorsement deals. This year, Big brother has upped the scales. The winner of this year’s season will take home a prize worth 85 million Naira in total. Imagine investing a part, just a part of this money into whatever dream or business you have.
It is like someone handing a fresh start to you and saying “take, go and have a better life”. I need a fresh start. Who else needs a fresh start?
We have been talking about the advantages, but I know this article will not be complete if I do not add at least one or two obvious disadvantages the Big Brother Naija reality show brings with it.

Disadvantages Of The Big Brother Naija Reality Show
It Is Addictive
You can’t blame the organizers of the show for this. Actually, this is also part of the advantages. It might be a win for them, but for those people who get addicted to watching it, it is definitely not a win. Like I said before, some people are not sleeping at all anymore. They prefer to stay awake and police Eric and Lilo. Lots of these people have pending projects they have been unable to finish because they are watching BBNAIJA.
Like I said before, this is not the fault of the organizers. Some people are just not disciplined enough to know where to draw the line. You might be hurting your eyes, sitting down in front of the TV all day. Are you smelling? Have you had your bath? Or you are too busy watching Dorothy get dressed. Those who leave the TV and then come on Twitter for bants are just the worst set. Lol.
Parents Fail To Stop Their Children From Watching It
The Big brother Naija show has an 18+ tag which means children are not allowed to watch. Sadly, some parents have little control over what their children watch. Others even allow their children to watch it with them. Then maybe when there’s a kissing part they shout Close your eyes!!. Seriously??? Get your kids out of there.

It Might Not Be 100% Real
This table I am shaking, hope it’s not a glass table??
If you’re a die-hard fan of Big brother Naija, you might want to beat me right now. Relax, take a deep breath. Things will turn out fine. As I was saying, reality shows are not 100% real so why do you think Big brother Naija will be any different?
These shows are usually mini scripted to maximize the level of intrigue and drama and keep the audience glued to their screens. Neat trick right? If there are no scripts, then there is usually interference from a “guiding hand” who steers participants towards certain actions. Nevertheless, this knowledge doesn’t take a lot from the entertainment value.
A final word from me. Big brother Naija has high economic value and is very helpful in showcasing new and emerging talent to the world. Every young talented person hopes for a ladder-like Big brother Naija that will assist us in climbing to the top. This year, like every other year, statesmen and clergy have come out to speak against the show and ask the federal government to scrap it from the channels. The popular opinion of these people is that it shows a bad example for our youth. My answer to this is simple: To every man his own.
