Can Luigi Mangione Regain Freedom?

It was a fine morning on the 4th of December, 2024 in Pennsylvania when the sound of a gunshot rang out. 50-year-old Brian Thompson, CEO of the American health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

The incident happened outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel’s entrance early in the morning. Thompson was in the city for UnitedHealthcare’s parent firm, UnitedHealth Group, to attend an annual investors’ meeting. The suspect left the scene after being initially identified as a white male with a mask.

At a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024, local police arrested Mangione following an employee’s call after a customer recognised the suspect from photos of Thompson’s accused killer that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) had released.

Before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old son of a well-known Maryland family, finished first in his class at a prestigious private school and had no prior criminal history.

Did Luigi Mangione Have Health Insurance?

He had stated on the internet that he has Lyme illness and spondylolisthesis. Mangione reportedly had a spinal fusion operation in July 2023, but according to the police, UnitedHealthcare did not cover him. The UnitedHealthcare also say Luigi wasn’t their client.

Luigi’s Social Media Reputation

Mangione ceased using social media in the summer of 2024. His mother filed a missing person’s complaint to the San Francisco Police Department on November 18, 2024, stating that the family had not heard from him since July of that year.

The Arrest of Mangione

Police claimed to have discovered a similar 3D-printed firearm and a phoney New Jersey driver’s license using the name “Mark Rosario,” which the alleged gunman used to check into a hostel in Manhattan when they searched Mangione at Altoona. Additionally, they discovered a 262-word handwritten essay that was partially about the American healthcare system.

This text was described as a manifesto by many media sites and matched the terms “Delay,” “Deny,” and “Depose” that were found on three cartridge casings that were discovered at the scene. In the insurance sector, the phrase “delay, deny, defend” is widely used to refer to the actions used by insurance firms to avoid paying claims. The three words are similar to this statement.

Hence, Mr Mangione’s alleged motivation was resentment at what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies.

On December 13, Mangione engaged Karen Friedman Agnifilo to defend his case after waiving his right to an extradition hearing and was flown to New York ten days later.

Mangione entered a not-guilty plea to his state charges at his arraignment in the New York Supreme Court on December 23.

Social Media Attention

Many social media users hailed Mangione as a folk hero after the shooting. Following his identification on Twitter, he gained over 460,000 followers.

Due to his apparent physical appeal, Mangione has garnered a lot of attention on social media, particularly from women. On the day of his arraignment, he was wearing a “washable Merino crewneck jumper” from Nordstrom, which they dubbed “Mangione Merino,” and it was selling out fast, according to social media users.

The public’s sometimes unfavourable perception of the health insurance sector and what many believe to be unjust claim denial procedures that cause harm have also been linked to the support Mangione garnered. Calls for health insurance reform have increased as a result of the case.

A GiveSendGo campaign has been in operation since December 13 and, as of January 18, 2025, had raised approximately US$225,215 from Mangione’s fans to pay for his legal fees.
