Football World Mourns the Tragic Loss of Diogo Jota and Brother André Silva

The football world has been thrown into mourning over the devastating loss of Diogo Jota, a Liverpool star player aged 28, and his younger brother André Silva aged 25, who died in a car accident in northwest Spain on Thursday, 3rd of July, 2025.

The Portuguese footballers were killed when their Lamborghini drove off the roadway near Zamora in northwestern Spain and caught fire. According to the Spanish Civil Guard, the fatal crash happened at approximately 12:35 a.m. local time on Thursday.

Initial investigations suggest the accident was caused by a burst tyre while their vehicle was overtaking another vehicle. The car was said to have come off the road, somersaulted and caught fire, the surrounding vegetation also caught flames and further worsened the fatality.

Despite prompt efforts by emergency services in the region, both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene. The Portuguese Football Federation verified Diogo and Andre’s deaths at roughly 8 a.m. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash and do not know who was driving.

Remembering Diogo Jota: A Star On and Off the Pitch

Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, also known as Diogo Jota, was one of Liverpool’s most talented centre-forwards. He played 182 games for Liverpool and scored 65 goals. His fans adored him because of his speed and accuracy in the clutch. Jota began his career at Portugal’s Paços de Ferreira and temporarily played on loan for Porto. In 2017, he briefly joined Wolverhampton Wanderers. In September 2020, he signed a £45 million contract with Liverpool and has since made headlines.

Diogo Jota’s personality off the pitch was just as impressive as his football abilities. Jota was well-known for his humility and dedication to his family; he was always proud of his Portuguese background and tightly knit relationship with his brother André.

The tragedy is made even more painful by its timing. Just 11 days before the accident, Diogo married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, 28, the love of his life since their teenage years. They have three beautiful children together. They got married on June 22 in Porto, the footballer’s home city.

He shared a beautiful video of their wedding day on his Instagram on Wednesday describing their wedding as “a day we will never forget.” This was his last Instagram post.

Honouring André Silva: A Rising Star Gone Too Soon

While much of the spotlight shines on Diogo Jota, it’s important not to forget André Silva, his younger brother, whose life and career were equally meaningful to those who knew him both personally and professionally.

He had been working hard to become more relevant and advance his football career. He most recently played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second level. As an attacking midfielder, he was noted for his versatility on the pitch. He appeared in 62 games and scored seven goals across two seasons, which is very outstanding.

He was not as famous as his brother, but those close to him saw the same drive and commitment his brother had. It is indeed sad to see such a promising young player’s life cut short even before the peak of his career.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are utterly devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain. Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the National Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his community.

On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, lined up the players. The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute’s silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women’s European Championship.
