But in all religion in a way has kept me in check, many actions not taken due to religion, both positive and negative.”

Breaking Free: The Nigerian Christian and the Burden of Approval

Growing up Nigerian, identity is often shaped by community, culture, and faith. From a young age, many of us are taught that respect, obedience, and societal validation are essential. As Christians, this is further reinforced by doctrines of humility, service, and sacrifice. While these values are noble, they can sometimes morph into an unhealthy need for constant approval—from family, church, and society.

The Pressure to Please

In Nigeria, there is an unspoken rule: your success is not just your own—it reflects your family, your upbringing, and even your faith. Every decision, from career to relationships, is scrutinized. As Christians, the pressure intensifies; we are expected to be “examples,” constantly living up to moral expectations set by both religious leaders and cultural norms. This often leads to a mindset where pleasing others becomes more important than personal growth or authenticity.

The Cost of Seeking Approval

Living for approval can be exhausting and limiting. It fosters:

  • Fear of Authenticity – The constant worry of disappointing others can make us suppress our true feelings, desires, and even beliefs.
  • Spiritual Burnout – Christianity is about a personal relationship with God, but when faith is driven by external validation, it becomes a performance rather than a journey of grace.
  • Lack of Personal Fulfillment – Decisions made to satisfy others rarely lead to true happiness. The weight of expectations can lead to regret, resentment, and even anxiety.

Breaking Free

The need for approval is deeply ingrained, but it is not a life sentence. Breaking free starts with:

  1. Understanding Your Worth – God’s love is unconditional. Your identity should not be tied to the opinions of others.
  2. Setting Boundaries – Not every expectation must be met. It’s okay to say no.
  3. Redefining Success – Success is not just about meeting societal standards but about living in alignment with purpose and authenticity.
  4. Embracing Growth – Mistakes and setbacks do not define you. Learning to navigate life on your terms strengthens both faith and character.

Conclusion

A Nigerian Christian who constantly seeks approval risks losing their true self in the process. Faith should be liberating, not a prison of expectations. True peace comes when we live not for the applause of people but for the purpose God has placed in us.”

“Religion is somehow the bane of my existence. I was born into a Christian family, but sometimes when I see other supposed Christians practising what they shouldn’t, I shudder. Religion has spoiled a whole lot of things and I have been a victim to religious extremists.”

“Religion has been a complex part of my life. It taught me valuable lessons, but I’ve come to realize that spirituality is a personal journey. I’ve found my path, embracing the unknown and finding meaning in my own way.”

“It has shaped me into who I am today.”

Thompson Omons (M)

“Religion has not taken much negative toll on me. I am a person of faith (Christianity) and I was mentored properly (but not at the beginning stage) in my Christian journey. Before accurate mentorship, I used to carry out some ‘Christian practices’ I didn’t understand or those I didn’t understand the building basis for practising. But now based on my accurate knowledge of my faith, I can say that ‘religion’ has helped me to see God in the light of how He wants me to. It has also helped me to be a better human in my interpersonal and social life.”

“Religion… hmm.. personally, if you ask how God has affected me, I’ll say I cannot do without Him. He is my very being, essence and identity. He is my Father, literally my Everything.
However, for religion, I’ve encountered nothing but liars, selfishness, vain people disguising themselves to be good, money-hungry men, sex-starved men with no relationship with the Holy Spirit… let me just stop here.”

“For me, not so much. But I’ve seen testimonies, guys detransitioning into girls, gays regaining their senses back, identity crises being resolved, the sick rising to walk, etc, some on SM, some RL. So, I’ll say it’s just so-so.”
