Lionel Messi just dropped a bomb on the entire football world, a legend is retiring from international football. This means that Lionel Messi will no longer play international matches representing Argentina, such as the World Cup.
This follows Argentina’s defeat to Spain during this year’s World Cup and the circumstances surrounding Messi while he participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His father was critically ill and was receiving medical treatment during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Lionel Messi played hoping Argentina would reach the final and win, hoping his father would recover enough to watch him play, but sadly his father died on August 8, 2026, at the age of 68.

“After this time that has passed since the final, thinking a lot, I want to inform you all that I am retiring from the National Team…
It was a decision that hurt and hurts in the soul but I understand it’s time. I swear that I always left everything, not only in the last years when everything was won before also and I always fought and left everything for this shirt, to give them joy and make them proud to be Argentinian through football.
It’s almost time and the stages are closing and this is one that hurts me a lot. I love, loved and will always love being in the National Team. I emptied myself, I don’t have anything else to give and behind me comes very big boys who deserve to be.
