Veteran Nigerian Icon, Onyeka Onwenu, Passes Away at 72

Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has passed away. The esteemed artist, aged 72, reportedly died on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.

Sources indicate that Onwenu collapsed following her stellar performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

She was swiftly taken to Reddington Hospital on Victoria Island, where she was later pronounced dead, as reported by The Guardian Newspaper. However, her family has not yet confirmed the news.

Onyeka Onwenu was born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. She launched her music career in the 1980s, with her debut album “For the Love of You” released in 1981. Onwenu gained widespread recognition with numerous albums and singles, including her hit song “One Love” which resonated with the hearts of many.

Her talent was not limited to music alone.

In addition to her music career, Onwenu also made significant contributions to the Nigerian film industry, appearing in several Nollywood films. She also served as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development (2013–2016) where she demonstrated her commitment to advocating for women’s rights and empowerment.

Throughout her illustrious career, Onyeka Onwenu remained a beloved figure in Nigerian society. Her contributions to music, film, and public service have left an indelible mark on the nation. Known affectionately as the “Elegant Stallion,” Onwenu’s legacy continues to inspire generations.

A source, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed sorrow over her passing, stating, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals tonight. After performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it.”
