Popular Nollywood Actor Baba Ijesha Involved in Rape Scandal
Seven days ago, popular Nollywood actor Olarenwaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha was arrested by the Police. According to sources, the case of defilement was reported to the police on 19th April 2021 by the popular actress Princess Adekola Adekanya (Princess Comedian) at Sabo Police Station.
According to Princess Comedian, the incident happened seven years ago. At that time, Baba Ijesha was a bosom friend who she was helping out. He had come to visit her that day in the house she lived in with her foster children. The victim was seven years old at that time and was molested by the accused when her mother went downstairs to see a guest off. Even though Baba Ijesha has admitted to the crime, some Nigerians have demanded that the CCTV evidence be released. Here is the video recording of Baba Ijesha’s admission.

Reliable sources such as Punch Newspaper have also hinted that the Police might release Baba Ijesha tomorrow 30th Friday, 2021. According to Punch Newspaper, the source said “There was no case of defilement, people are just talking out of sentiment. They are not talking from the point of the law. We interviewed all parties involved in the case for three hours today (Wednesday).
The mother complained that her child was at the age of seven when she was defiled and the child pointed at Baba Ijesha but the case was not reported until she was 14 years and under the law, the case has become statute-barred.
Regarding this new case, the CCTV footage has been assessed and nowhere was it captured that Baba Ijesha defiled her. The footage only showed him touching the victim’s body but it never showed him having any sexual intercourse with the girl. The girl also confirmed the same thing.
So, in law, it is a case of indecent assault and not sexual harassment, and it is open to bail. So, can we continue to keep him when the offence is subject to bail and when there is no court sitting? That is against his fundamental human rights and the police do not work on sentiments. Directives have been given out for his release on bail.”
The source, however, said that despite granting Omiyinka bail, the investigation would continue, adding that the command had also sought legal opinion from the state Ministry of Justice.”
Prominent and Ordinary Nigerians Speak Out And Take Action
Since the Baba Ijesha defilement case went viral, popular Nigerians have spoken out in outrage. On Twitter, influencers and celebrities have lent their voice on the matter. Nigerians are currently signing a petition against the release of the actor. Some of the tweets and videos bemoan the lack of proper law enforcement in Nigeria. They also condemn people supporting Baba Ijesha, agitating for his release and requesting for the video of the defilement.
Iyabo Ojo and other well-meaning Nigerian celebrities have expressed their dissatisfaction with the police for their decision to release Baba Ijesha on bail. Iyabo went one step further by following the Princess Comedian(the victim’s mother) to Panti police station today to ensure that Baba Ijesha is not released. This video, and others below.
